Bush Beans
I love to grow bush beans in the summer months. They are such a versatile vegetable and so easy to grow! Here are some growing tips for you:
Timing is Key
Think about when you want to plant. In most parts of Australia, spring (September to November) is the perfect time. If you're in a warmer area, you might even plant in autumn (February to March).
2. Choose Your Spot
Look for a sunny spot in your garden that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight a day. Picture a cozy corner that’ll be bursting with green!
3. Prepare Your Soil
Get your hands dirty! Mix in some compost or well-rotted manure to give your soil a nutrient boost. Loosen it up to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) deep to create a welcoming home for your beans.
4. Time to Plant
When you’re ready, plant your seeds about 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep and 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) apart or your seedlings at the same distance. Visualize neat little rows, all lined up and ready to grow. Give them a good drink of water afterward!
5. Care for Your Beans
Keep an eye on your plants! Water them consistently, especially during dry spells. A layer of mulch can help keep the moisture in and the weeds out.
6. Watch for Pests
Be on the lookout for pesky pests like aphids or caterpillars. If you see them, don’t hesitate to relocate them away from your little beans.
7. Harvesting Time
Your beans will be ready in about 50-60 days. When they’re young and tender, snap them off the plant. The more you pick, the more they’ll produce!
8. After the Harvest
Once you’ve enjoyed your bounty, think about planting a cover crop or a different crop to keep your soil healthy. Your garden will thank you!
9. Extra Tips Just for You
If you want to mix things up, try companion planting with corn or zucchini. It can create a vibrant garden ecosystem!
Don’t forget to rotate your crops each season. It helps maintain soil health and keeps pests at bay.
When planting your seeds or seedlings I recommend not planting in the middle of the day, especially on a really hot day. The seedlings especially need a gentle ‘transition’ from the seedling pot to the garden.
